Hilton College Station & Conference
Center
801 University Drive East
College Station, TX 77840
(979) 693.7500
to attend the
First International Conference on Pragmatism and the Hispanic/Latino World.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE EVENT
(1) The conference
will demonstrate the growth and vitality of the field of ÒAmericanÓ Philosophy,
broadly conceived to include North American and Latin American Philosophy. It
seeks to foster a Pan-American dialogue in Philosophy in a new and promising
area of research and teaching in Philosophy;
(2) The conference
fills a void in research in the humanities and will challenge traditional
canons of scholarship. Delegates to the conference will argue that the unique
contributions of Hispanic philosophers to the history of Pragmatism have yet to
be reckoned, much less appreciated, and that Pragmatism offers tools and
resources for solving contemporary social, ethical, or political problems
experienced by Hispanics in and outside the United States;
(3) The conference
will stimulate further research, translations, and international
collaborations. The Inter-American
Philosophy Review, a new
on-line Journal created to foster Inter-American philosophical dialogue, has
expressed interest in publishing articles based on the papers presented at the
conference;
(4) Hispanics/Latinos comprise emerging populations on American college campuses,
and these students will become increasingly interested in studying philosophy
if they are encouraged to learn how Hispanic philosophers have appropriated and
modified the central insights of American pragmatism.
