McCann's principle research and teaching interests are in action theory, metaphysics, and philosophy of religion. He has authored a book of papers on action theory and co-authored a book on critical thinking, and has published numerous papers, mainly on action theory and philosophy of religion. He is presently at work on a book on creation. From 1991 to 1996, he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association.
