The Application Process

(Please pay close attention to the information on this page to make sure that all items are sent to the correct addresses.)

A formal application is required of all persons seeking admission to graduate study at Texas A&M University. The application consists of three sets of materials:

  1. All applicants must complete the Texas Common Application on-line at: href=https://www.applytexas.org/adappc/commonapp.WBX.

  2. To be submitted to the Office of Graduate Admissions:
    1. Application fee: $50 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents; $75 for iternational applicants. (PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY CASH/CHECK/MONEY ORDERS TO THE PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT - THIS IS TO BE SENT TO GRADUATE ADMISSIONS)
    2. Official transcripts from each senior level post-secondary institution attended. (OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SENT TO GRADUATE ADMISSIONS - NOT TO THE PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT - IF SENT TO THE DEPARTMENT, THIS CAN CAUSE A DELAY IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS)
    3. GRE scores, to be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to Texas A&M University (code 6003). Scores must be from a date within five years of the date of application.

  3. To be submitted directly to the Philosophy Department:
    1. Resume
    2. Three letters of recommendation
    3. Statement of purpose (applicants to the Ph.D program should include a discussion of what they propose to use as their required supplementary master's degree from another discipline, and how that degree would supplement their research and/or teaching interests within philosophy - for details on the supplementary master's requirement, see "Supporting Degree" under PhD program requirements.
    4. Writing sample

Be sure to specify which degree you are seeking.

If you are applying to the PhD program, your statement of purpose should indicate what fields you are considering using as your supporting master's degree, and if you have already completed a master's degree which you wish to use for this purpose, you should explain how it complements your research and teaching interests within philosophy.

Deadlines:

All students seeking admission for the fall semester must complete their applications by March 1 and August 1 for the Spring semester. All applicants who complete their applications by those dates will be considered for graduate teaching assistantships. Applications for spring admission will be considered, but there usually are no teaching assistantships available starting then. As mentioned above, students wishing to be considered for university-wide Graduate Merit Fellowships, which begin in the fall, must complete their applications by January 1.
