A virtual tour of
Portugal

Where tailgating is a national passtime,
and the "rules" of the road are merely suggestions.

  • This "tour" was created by Gary Varner, and it documents Gary's and Melissa's trip to Portugal during July of 2000.

  • Please begin by sizing your screen appropriately. First, adjust the horizontal margins of your browser so that the window is just a bit wider than the line of plus signs below (no horizontal scroll bar should appear at the bottom of your browser window).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  • Now go ahead and maximize your browser window vertically.

  • Then select a destination from the links below and bon voyage! If you follow the yellow hyperlinks on each page (the ones that look like this) you'll end up taking the whole tour in roughly the order we traveled. Some of the other links (which look like this) will only work if your computer has a live internet connection (that note is for our family and friends who are probably viewing this off a CD).

When Gary was invited to give a public lecture on the moral status of animals by the Foundation for Luso-American Development, we decided it was time to hop the pond for our first time, since the Foundation was paying Gary's way over. So we cashed in a bunch of frequent flyer miles to get Melissa over and spent all of her two weeks' vacation in Portugal.

Basically, we spent time in three places:

  1. the fishing village of Peniche,

  2. Lisboa (Lisbon), and

  3. the mountain village of Gerês.

We suggest that you start, as we did, by getting out of the big city and checking out the fishing village of Peniche.
