Our return to The Big City was shocking. After six days in the placid countryside, merely getting the car safely off the freeway and into the rental car return area was a blood pressure-raising experience. We took a cab from the airport to the Hotel Jorges V, where the good people from FLAD (the Foundation for Luso-American Development) were putting us up (at approximately five times the cost of our room in Peniche). |

Gary had been invited to give two talks in Lisboa. One was a
public lecture on the moral status
of animals and the other was a two hour presentation on
the same topic to a week-long
Bioethics Institute organized by Gary
Comstock of Iowa State University and Humberto Rosa of FLAD.
| Since their invitation to give these talks led to us visiting Portugal, we hope they know how much we appreciate the invitation and financial support (and we hope they get a kick out of this "virtual tour" of beautiful Portugal).

| After Lisboa, we rented another car and drove north to visit the mountain village of Gerês. | |
