Tiles, tiles, tiles

While Gary was giving his second talk in Lisboa, Melissa found her way across town to the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (the National Tile Museum).

The Museum is in an old convent and features a chronologically ordered display of tile manufactuing techniques (which haven't changed much in centuries) and varous painting styles (which have).

Here are some examples (albeit replicas which Melissa bought in the Museum gift shop).

Above: an example of an earlier, simpler painting techinique.

Above right: a more modern style, with relief to match the painted areas.

Right: a contemporary design.

Related to tiles, somehow (we suppose), the sidewalks in Portugal are all cobblestone, with various intricate designs as illustrated below.
